Abstract

In 1976 I wrote The Post-Physician Era 1 in which I predicted that within 50 years, physicians — that is, doctors who diagnose and treat illness — will be rendered obsolete by computers and by allied health personnel, whom I called “medics”. I claimed, and still claim, that this development is possible, inevitable and desirable.
