Modeling Stomatogastric Ganglion

Abstract

The stomatogastric ganglion, with its small number of re-identifiable neurons, offers one of the best opportunities in any neural system for accurate modeling of integrative properties at both cellular and network levels. Modeling serves many valuable purposes: Models can test theories of integration, indicate areas requiring further investigation, provide artificial preparations for experimentation and theory development, and more (Perkel and Moore 1966, Hartline 1980). This paper first introduces the subject of dendritic tree modeling, one example of which is dealt with in detail in the following paper. It will then focus on network modeling at three levels of increasing physiological accuracy: theoretical models, parameter-fitted models, and parameter-measured models.
