Abstract

In 1921, Schmincke and Régaud described, independently of each other, malignant neoplasms arising from the tonsillar tissue of the nasopharynx [31, 29]. Consisting of an intimate mixture of lymphatic and carcinomatous tissue components, they were given the name of “lymphoepitheliomas.” Later, a “Schmincke” type with its dominating lymphatic component and fading epithelial strains was discerned from the “Régaud” type, showing only poor lymphatic admixture and rather resembling an anaplastic carcinoma.
