The Role of Promotion in the Carcinogenesis of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

  • Chapter
Cancer of the Liver, Esophagus, and Nasopharynx

Abstract

It is well known that evidence for the chemical promotion of cocarcinogenesis was first provided by Berenblum. Subsequently, Mottram, Boutwell, Van Duren, and Hecker were responsible for defining many important aspects of the initiation and promotion of two-stage carcinogenesis. Recently, the concept of two-stage carcinogenesis has been extended to the carcinogenesis of the liver, urinary bladder, kidney, lung, and mammary gland [11]. As for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) carcinogenesis, the role of promotion largely remains to be explored.
