Abstract
Research into etiological factors of esophageal cancer has increased considerably in the past 1 or 2 decades. There are several reasons for the growing interest in this specific tumor site, one of the more important being the epidemiological identification of defined high-risk areas for this type of cancer [4, 22], such as, for example, the Iranian part of the Caspian Sea and Linxian County in China, both areas belonging to the same belt of high incidence of esophageal cancer. Other important areas to be mentioned here are the Transkai in South Africa or Normandy and Brittany in northwestern France.
