Abstract

Yangcheng is a mountainous county located at the southern end of the Taihang mountain range in the southeastern part of Shanxi province. It has an area of 1968 km2, 24 communes, 451 production brigades, 2251 villages, and 81 388 families, with a population of 360 000, mostly peasants. Yangcheng and the other counties nearby are suitable for agricultural production and are very rich in coal resources. The area is also noticeable for its remarkably high incidence of esophageal cancer (EC).
