Immunohistochemical Localization of a Gastrin/CCK-like Peptide in the Brain of the Honeybee

  • Conference paper
Neurobiology and Behavior of Honeybees

Abstract

The characteristics and distribution of gastrin/CCK-like immunoreactivity in the brain of the honeybee are described. Gastrin/CCK-like immunofluorescence is localized in bands within the peduncular and lobular parts of the mushroom bodies and is also present in the central body. Additional immunoreactivity is demonstrated in the ocellar tracts, optic lobes, lateral protocerebrum and antennal lobes following in vivo pretreatment with colchicine. Immunoreactive cell bodies are present in the pars intercerebralis and anteromedial protocerebrum. These are also demonstrated using the peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) technique, but staining of neuropil is poor compared to that obtained by indirect immunofluorescence. Staining at the EM level revealed immunoreactivity in synaptic terminals. The sensitivity of the different immunohistochemical procedures used to localize gastrin/CCK-like immunoreactivity is discussed. In the mushroom bodies and central body, the pattern of immunoreactivity closely resembles the distribution of biogenic amines such as dopamine and serotonin, with which the peptide may be co-localized. This peptide could play a role in mediating or modulating neural transmission in the bee brain.
