Abstract
In this work we show that 1.) X-ray absorption studies of diferric chicken ovotransferrin (Fe2COT) provide evidence for direct water coordination at the metal binding sites. 2.) The immediate environment of the iron atoms appears unaltered as a function of pH when spectra are recorded in the non-chelating buffer MES. 3.) Studies on human serum transferrin provide no evidence for structural changes at the metal coordination sites as a consequence of proposed interdomain cooperativity.
