Abstract

A general formalism for evaluating the interaction potential of a charged particle with a solid is developed using linear response theory. The detailed form of this potential at small distances from the surface where the image description fails, is essential for interpretation of experimental data on image potential surface states in metals, surface resonance states in metals, in scattering of charged particles and also MVM tunnel effect experiments.
