Abstract

The phenomenon of squeezed states of light has led to exciting theoretical and experimental work in quantum optics. Squeezed states might have important applications, in optical communications [1–3] or high-precision interferometric measurements [4–6], or perhaps in other areas not yet apparent. Just as important, squeezed states offer a fundamental probe into the quantum nature of light. The recent experiment at AT&T Bell Laboratories [7], which successfully generated and detected squeezed-state light, gives impetus to further theoretical and experimental efforts.
