In allen Industrieländern der Welt schätzt man den aus Trauben durch alkoholische Gärung gewonnenen Wein. In Deutschland kommen hierfür nur die Trauben von Vitis vinifera in Frage; in anderen Ländern, vor allem in Übersee, werden zum Teil auch noch andere Vitis-Arten verwendet, wie Vitis labrusca und Vitis rotundifolia (Muscadine) in USA.
