Abstract
The arteries of the pelvis are branches of the common iliac artery, which divides into the external iliac artery for the lower limb and the internal iliac artery for the pelvis and gluteal region. The complex development of the pelvic organs accounts for many variations, and explains why the ovaries, uterine tubes and rectum have a supraregional supply from the lumbar aorta. The ovarian and testicular arteries are branches of the lumbar aorta. On the right side the superior mesenteric artery supplies the ascending colon, cecum and vermiform appendix. On the left side the inferior mesenteric artery supplies the sigmoid colon and rectum.
