Abstract

Cardiac function in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is influenced by: (a) the severity of the lung injury; (b) the response of the lung destruction affecting the pulmonary circulation, which causes (c) an increase in the pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary hypertension; (d) the therapeutic maneuvers, positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and pharmacological support; and (e) preexisting heart diseases such as coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, and myocarditis.
