Abstract

Anxiety disorder is the most frequent psychiatric diagnosis made in America. A recent NIMH catchment area household survey (Shapiro et al. 1984), which involved almost 10000 persons, estimated that 8.3% of the adult U. S. population had suffered from anxiety disorders during the past 6 months. The two next highest diagnostic categories were alcohol and drug abuse (6.4%) and depression (6.0%), followed by schizophrenia (1.0%). Interestingly, however, only 23% of those patients suffering from anxiety actually received treatment. These data are in agreement with those obtained in the 1979 National Household Survey conducted by Baiter’s group (Mellinger and Baiter 1981; Uhlenhuth et al. 1983), who found the following psychiatric illness prevalences for the past year: agoraphobicpanic disorder (1.2%), other phobic disorders (2.3%), generalized anxiety disorder (6.4%), and depressive disorders (5.1%). In this household survey it was again observed that only a relatively small percentage of those suffering from psychic distress and given a DSM III diagnosis as derived from the Hopkins Symptom Checklist criteria actually were treated for anxiety (Uhlenhuth et al. 1983).
