Abstract
After three decades of progress in cardiology, anesthesia, cardias surgery, perfusion techniques and postoperative care; low cardiac output syndrome continues to be a major cause of morbility and mortality in cardiac surgical patients. There are several factors:

we are operating on sicker and older patients;

2.
we have many patients with progressive myopathy;
-
3.
we have patients who arrive at surgery after problems during angioplasty or thrombolytic coronary therapy;
-
4.
we are treating patients after acute myocardial infarction and/or cardiogenic shock.
Advances in pharmacology and other treatment, such as pacing, do not always provide adequate improvement in the above mentioned category of patients with low cardiac output syndrome. For these reasons, a number of mechanical cardiac assist techniques have been developed and clinically utilized.
