Toxicology — the Next Decade

Abstract

The development of toxicology will be addressed to two fundamental problems. First, the need to predict long term effects on the basis of tests of relatively short duration; and secondly, the need to effect better extrapolation to man. The extension of toxicology to include adverse nutritional effects imparts a degree of urgency to the resolution of these problems. It is expected that the use of structure activity relationships applied to pharmacokinetic studies supported by cultures of animal and human tissues will facilitate the identification of crucial effects leading to human disease and provide a framework for their prediction. It is anticipated, however, that major advances will depend on the continued development of molecular biology and the investigation of chemical interference with gene expression and cell-surface receptor integrity.
