Abstract
Inhalation anesthetics undergo biotransformation in humans and they follow the general pathway of breakdown of drugs. Most prominent is the oxidative pathway depdendent on the non-specific microsomal hepatic enzyme system, commonly abbreviated P450. This non-specific system oxidizes xenobiotics and is unique in requiring the presence of di-oxygen (O2) and NADPH. The general reaction of xenobiotics in this system is depicted in Figure 1.
