Abstract
There are a number of dermatological diseases in which transcutaneous (tc) PO2 measurements have become important. Such diseases include skin ulcers, particularly among diabetics, gangrene, ulcus cruris, acrocyanosis, and scleroderma. In all diseases in which microcirculatory changes are involved and in which Doppler sonography alone is not able to provide definite information on the actual O2 supply to the skin, tcPO2 measurements have become a valuable diagnostic tool. Moreover, tcPO2 measurement provides an objective method of evaluating the effect of the different modes of therapy. If amputation is necessary, the method can be used to preoperatively determine the level of amputation to ensure that the supply of oxygen is sufficient for optimum healing.
