Abstract
In order to understand transcutaneous PO2 measurements, it is of importance to know the PO2 profile in the epidermis and the cutis (stratum papillare corii) lying directly beneath it, since the O2 exchange can be recognized directly from the PO2 profile. Intracutaneous measurements, which up to now have been carried out only with relatively large polarographic electrodes, are not able to give information about PO2 profiles [3, 4, 11]. Using a model, Grossmann and Lübbers tried to calculate the distribution of oxygen pressure within the skin, which is important for the gas exchange in transcutaneous PO2 measurements, and, using simulation calculations, attempted to predict the behavior of tcPO2 under different conditions [5, 6].
