The T-Cell Receptor Recognizes Nominal and Self Antigen Independently. A Theoretical Alternative to the Modified Self Concept

Specificity and Function of Clonally Developing T Cells

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 126))

Abstract

We explore the thesis that the T-cell receptor (TCR) interacts with nominal antigen and MHC antigen separately rather than with a complex formed by both antigens (Hoffmann 1984). The TCR has an innate specificity for MHC and its autoreactive potential is exercised during the maturation of the T cell in the thymus. We propose that mature T cells retain this reactivity for self.
