Abstract
A reasonably accurate discrimination between nonself antigens which need to elicit immune responses and self components which must avoid eliciting immune responses is essential for health. It is evident that this discrimination is not always effective, since ‘spontaneous’ autoimmune diseases of humans or experimental animals are far from rare.
