Diagnostic Procedures in Pancreatic Disease

Abstract

Chonic pancreatitis is an uncommon disease. In autopsy series its incidence ranges from 0.18% to 2.8% [1, 13, 17, 18, 20]. There seems to have been a gradual increase in the incidence of chronic pancreatitis during the past decade, since in a recent retrospective study evaluating autopsy protocols from the periods 1966–1968, 1972–1974, and 1978–1980, its average incidence increased from 0.5% in 1966–1968 to 2.2% in 1978–1980 (Fig. 1). This rise was mainly caused by an increase in the alcohol-associated cases.
