Zusammenfassung
Mittels der in den letzten 2 Jahrzehnten entwickelten diagnostischen Verfahren (Kardiotokographie, Ultraschall, Mikroblutuntersuchungen beim Fetus) ist die Neugeborenensterblichkeit deutlich geringer geworden. In der Regel erlauben die heutigen geburtsmedizinischen Überwachungsmethoden das so frühzeitige Erkennen einer drohenden fetalen Asphyxie — als Ausdruck einer vorwiegend respiratorischen Plazentainsuffizienz —, daß Neugeborene mit schweren, durch Sauerstoffmangel unter der Geburt bedingten zerebralen Schäden wesentlich seltener geworden sind.
