Abstract
The past several years have seen a dramatic upsurge in interest in the psychological aspects of medical illness [1–8]. Subdivisions of health psychology and behavioral medicine have developed within the field of psychology, paralleling the growth of the consultation liaison subspecialty within psychiatry. Such specialization is a result of greater interest among medical specialties in the psychological sequelae of technologically sophisticated therapies. Germ-free environments [9] and coronary care units [10] represent two types of environmentally stressful treatments. Radiotherapy [11–14] and chemotherapy [15] pose unique psychological stresses and psychiatric syndromes for patients with cancer.
