Abstract
Between 1976 and 1983 some 7000 arthroscopies were performed; some 450 of these resulted in an arthroscopic operation. 100 patients suffering from bucket-handle lesions of the medial meniscus who had undergone arthroscopic partial meniscectomy were compared to 100 patients suffering from the same injuries but who had undergone arthrotomy. The same team performed surgery on both patient groups over the same period of time. At least one year went by between the first and the second re-examination. Most of the arthroscopic surgery was performed in gas with N2O.
