Optical Properties of 2D Systems in the Far Infrared

Abstract

Spectroscopic investigations in the far infrared (FIR) reveal a great number of fundamental excitations in two-dimensional electron (2D) systems. In this lecture I will discuss the fundamental optical properties of a 2D electron layer embedded between a semiconductor and isolator. Fundamental excitations such as cyclotron resonance [1–7], 2D plasmons [8–10] excited via grating couplers and the blackbody emission [11,12] from hot 2D electrons will be discussed in a classical approach. Experimental work on 2D plasmon spectroscopy in absorption and emission and very recent results on hot electron emission will be presented.
