Abstract

We are interested in the study of structures or heterogeneities in the medium-size range (10 to 500 A) that may exist in our metallic glasses. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is an appropriate tool for studying such defects, because unlike for SAXS, sample thicknesses of the order of 1 mm can be used to increase the irradiated volume and the signal and because low scattering vectors Q = 4πsinθ/λ and scattering angles 2θ are easily accessible with long neutron wave lengths λ ≃ 10 A. Among the defects we might observe, we will discuss here: quenched-in density fluctuations, regions of compositional heterogeneities, magnetic structural defects such as Bloch walls in ferromagnetic glasses and external surfaces and surface defects.
