Advection of Calanus Finmarchicus Between Habitats in Norwegian Coastal Waters

The exchange of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus between the Vestfjord and the Norwegian coastal current was studied by net sampling and hydrography. The species was probably recruited to wintering habitats in the Vestfjord from reproduction habitats in the frontal zone of the Norwegian coastal current. The wintering generation spawns in the Vestfjord in late winter, but their offspring are flushed out by freshwater outflow, possibly recruiting to the spawning habitat of a shelf break front to the west of the Lofoten Islands. Offspring from this habitat seems to accumulate at a thermal front farther offshore. C. finmarchicus is to some extent transported by water of coastal origin, into the central Norwegian Sea.
