Abstract
Primary production measurements carried out during spring for several years in the waters S and SW of Iceland are dealt with. On average the blooming starts in nearshore waters and is delayed with increasing distance from the coast. In the shallowest part of Faxaflói the onset of blooming is in late March, whereas in offshore waters the start is not until after the middle of May. For individual years the results reveal great yearly fluctuations in the onset of blooming as well as lasting of established blooms. Of the factors causing these variations the stability and grazing are the most important ones. Within the shelf region the interactions between runoff and wind regime greatly affects stability conditions and thus the pattern of phytoplankton growth development each year.
