River Runoff and Shrimp Abundance in a Tropical Coastal Ecosystem — the Example of the Sofala Bank (Central Mozambique)

Abstract

Abundance indices of the shallow-water shrimp Penaeus indicus in Central Mozambique were analyzed by length groups, and related to Zambezi runoff on a year-to-year basis for the period 1974–1983. The Zambezi outflow seems to influence the recruitment strength P.indicus either by directly affecting the number of recruits or by inducing changes in the size at migration (or a combination of both). Too high effort levels during the period of recruitment since 1979 appear, however, to be exerting a detrimental effect on annual abundance.
