Nutrient use strategy by evergreen-oak (Quercus ilex ssp. ilex) in NE Spain

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIG,volume 15))

Abstract

Quercus ilex is adapted to the low winter temperatures characteristic of high elevation sites (see Comin et al. in this volume) and low soil moisture caused by the lack of summer precipitation in the mediterranean basin. Extremes in these conditions in mediterranean climate zones are more unpredictable than in other climate regions and adaptative strategies that minimize the effects of extreme cold or drought stress are probably important for survival. This paper is a first attempt at describing possible nutrient use strategies of the evergreen-oak that may help overcome mineral resource fluctuations due to large discontinuities in the hydrological fluxes (see Comin et al. in this volume). The biogeochemistry at La Castanya experimental station is described and mineral nutrient fluxes between stems and leaves of Q. ilex. are estimated.
