Plant Response to Stress

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIG,volume 15))

Abstract

Weber et al. (1985) and Tenhunen et al. (this volume) have proposed that net photosynthesis (NP) may be described empirically as a function of the leaf internal partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Pi), according to the relationship,

$$NP = \frac{{CE \cdot Pi \cdot Pm}}{{{{({P_{{m^2}}} + C{E^2} \cdot {P_{{i^2}}})}^{1/2}}}} - {R_d}$$
(1)

where CE, carboxylation efficiency, is the initial slope of the NP vs. Pi response curve under saturating irradiance; Pm, photosynthetic capacity, is the CO2-saturated rate of assimilation; and Rd is dark respiration.
