Laser Treatment of Periodontopathies

Abstract

Since 1960, when Maiman,through the application of Schawlow’s theory to a resonating cavity, obtained for the first time a lasser emission in the form of a monochromatic red coherent light, the development of this new kind of light energy is keeping pace with physical research and application in various fields of technology as well as in medicine. In 1962, coherent light emitting diodes were developed, the first of wich was consisting of Gallium Arsenide emitting in the infrared band. From the beginning, it was endeavoured to use this new energy (surgical laser) and then in medicine. The International Laser Research Group entrusted our Institute with the task to assess the effect Laser light obtained from a diode on human tissues. A Laser diode is consisting of a “doped” crystal with an electron “donor” and an electron “acceptor”. At prefixed frequency values, the Laser diode can considerably amplify electromagnetic radiations, by means of a system called “electron holes”. The Laser diode wich has already proved its activity on human tissues,has an operating power of 12 mW, a wave length of 904 NM, a band width of 3.5 nm and an emission angle of +0 -12 degrees.
