Abstract

The relationship between DNA sequence evolution and morphological evolution is not yet known in much useful detail. Empirical and theoretical population genetics are consistent with all we know about speciation and morphological variation in natural populations. We acknowledge, nevertheless, that we need a better understanding of gene expression and developmental mechanisms before we can understand in detail both the patterns and the mechanisms of morphological evolution. We therefore have chosen to identify those research programs and past accomplishments that should further our understanding of the evolutionary processes that produce differences of large taxonomic scale.
