Abstract
The epicardial coronary arteries in man are now considered dynamic vascular structures rather than passive conduits. Recordings from ring segments of human coronary arteries placed in an isolated tissue bath have shown coordinated rhythmic periods of contraction and relaxation [1]. Calcium ions are the final common mediator of coronary tone, but regulatory mechanisms include vasoactive amines [2], biochemical environment, autonomic nervous system [3], circadian biorhythms [4], and local factors.
