Abstract
Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is a safe and effective treatment for selected patients with obstructive coronary disease, usually without prior bypass surgery, who have isolated proximal coronary stenoses [1]. Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) has also proven to be an effective treatment of obstructive coronary artery disease which has enabled the vast majority of patients to obtain 5–10 years of useful life with the anginal syndrome relieved or improved in over 80% of these bypass patients [2]. However, direct myocardial revascularization surgery (CABG) is not a cure for coronary atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis continues to progress as long as the patients continue to survive.
