Seit dem Aufkommen der Antibiotika, der Entwicklung der Intensivmedizin und erweiterter Transplantationsmöglichkeiten wird vermehrt über solche Pilzinfektionen, die vorher kaum eine Rolle spielten, wie Mykosen des Herzens, der Niere, des Gehirns, der Knochen und Gelenke und Fälle von Pilzsepsis berichtet.
