The Systematic Classification of Brain Infarcts

  • Chapter
The Cerebral Infarct

Abstract

Total infarction of the supply area of the middle cerebral artery, including the anterior choroidal artery, does not always occur following occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. We know from our early experience (ZÜLCH and HERBERG 1949) that following acute occlusion of the internal carotid artery in the neck, infarction occurred in two-thirds of the cases, corresponding to the complete, or at least the central, territory of the middle cerebral artery. This has been confirmed by RADÜ and MOSELEY (1978), who found infarcts following occlusion of the carotid artery in 21 out of 35 cases.
