Abstract
This chapter attempts to deal with the problem: How should responses to existing personality questionnaires be analyzed so as to extract a maximum of valid information from these responses? After a brief overview of the alternatives to taking the unweighted sum of the item scores, we concentrate on one of these alternatives, namely methods of scoring that account for the relevance of a questionnaire scale for the individual (Fiske, this volume) or its salience (Jackson, this volume). Through secondary analysis of questionnaire data collected by Brokken (1978) and Luteijn (1974) we will test the incremental validity of a more sophisticated alternative scoring method of this kind. On the theoretical side, we pay special attention to the notion of moderator effects associated with these approaches. Both our empirical findings and our theoretical arguments lead us to the conclusion that the burden of proof in demonstrating the validity of a sophisticated approach is on its proponents.
