Zusammenfassung

Eine Ironie der wissenschaftlichen Begriffsgeschichte hat es gewollt, daß William B. Carpenter, der den ideomotorischen Erscheinungen ihren Namen gab, zugleich dazu beigetragen hat, Begriff und Erscheinungen in Mißkredit zu bringen. Nach Carpenter ist eine Sequenz von Bewegungen dann ideomotorisch, wenn sie ohne gesonderten Willensimpuls allein aufgrund einer Kette von Ideen erfolgt. Ideomotorisch in diesem weiten Sinne sind also alle Handlungen, die automatisch ablaufen — von der Steuerung der Gliedmaßen bei der Lokomotion bis hin zum Aussprechen eines Gedankens, welches unter Anleitung eben dieses Gedankens ganz von selbst erfolgt (Carpenter, 1874, S. 280). Da zwischen leitenden Ideen und geleiteten Bewegungen keine besonderen inhaltlichen Beziehungen postuliert werden, fällt Carpenters Begriff der ideomotorischen Handlung praktisch mit dem der automatischen Handlung zusammen und ist insofern eigentlich überflüssig.
