The Genetic Stability of Endogenous Type B and C Retroviruses in BALB/c Sublines
Retroviruses have been extensively studied in a number of feral species and inbred strains of the genus Mus (Callahan and Todaro 1978; Callahan et al. 1982; Cohen and Varmus 1979). These viruses are transmitted as infectious agents and as endogenous proviral genomes. Infectious retroviruses have been classified by morphologic and biochemical criteria into type A, type B, and type C viral particles (Dalton 1972; Schidlovsky 1977). Type B retroviruses are associated with a high incidence of mammary tumor development in certain strains of mice, and are designated MMTY (mouse mammary tumor virus). Type C retroviruses, represented by MuLV (murine leukemia virus), are associated with the development of leukemias and lymphomas. Endogenous proviral genomes of MMTV and MuLV have been shown to be present in all inbred strains of M. musculus domesticus (Coffin 1984).
