Abstract

This chapter considers the radiative transfer equation as the kinetic equation of the photon gas. Section 3.1 introduces the transfer equation and defines the phenomenological emission and absorption coefficients and the source function. Section 3.2 discusses emission-absorption processes corresponding to bound-bound, free-bound, and free-free transitions, and Sect. 3.3 scattering by stationary and moving particles, respectively.
