Abstract
Hiltner’s rhizosphere could not exist without the underlying phenomenon now most commonly referred to as root exudation, which is associated with all higher plants. Other terms that have been applied to the release or movement of substances from living roots into the surrounding soil are excretion, secretion, diffusion, liberation, and leakage. This varied terminology may reflect some confusion created by the fact that the mechanisms responsible for release of organic substances from roots have not been entirely clarified (see Chap. 2.2.6).
