Formation of Cardenolides in Cell and Organ Cultures of Digitalis lanata

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Cell cultures were grown from different Digitalis species (cf. [4, 12, 23, 31, 32, 34, 38, 44, 45, 48, 49, 51, 57]). However, in callus and suspension cultures without morphogenesis either no cardenolides were found [4, 10, 13–15, 19, 20, 33, 41, 42, 50] or with more sensitive methods, e.g., specific RIAs, only traces of cardenolides were detected ([12, 31, 34, 44] own unpublished results, but cf. [37, 39, 40]), even if potential precursors were administered [31]. Kartnig et al. reported that cardenolid production measurable with cell strains of D. lanata which were freshly obtained (as that of other secondary products) ceased during repeated subcultivation [21, 24, 25]. In contrast several groups of other steroids (sterols [14, 19, 20], steroidal saponins [14, 25], and progesterone [14]) were reported to be synthesized in morphologically unorganized long-term cultures of D. lanata.
