Abstract
The progressive loss of bone mass with age is a universal phenomenon, occurring in both sexes and all races from about 40 years on. It begins earlier and is ultimately more marked in women than in men; it shows a linear correlation with age and produces frank osteoporosis with skeletal failure in 30% of caucasians over 70 years of age (Exton-Smith et al, 1969a; Garn et al, 1967; Newton-John and Morgan, 1968; Nordin, 1966).
