Abstract
Until recently, avascular necrosis (AVN) of bone was usually associated with injury or infection. During the last few decades, however, many other causes have come to light and, with the increasing use of corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive agents, drug-induced necrosis has assumed alarming proportions (Table I). Two questions are explored in this paper: 1) What links these apparently disparate conditions? 2) Is there a final common pathway leading to bone death?
