Abstract

Sir James Paget presented five cases illustrating a chronic, slowly progressive and disabling bone disorder to the Medical and Chirurgical Society of London on November 14, 1876 (Handy, 1981). A century later, we are able to apply medical therapy which slows the progress of the disease in many patients but cures none. The etiology of Paget’s disease remains obscure, although recent evidence suggests (but does not prove), that its cause is a putative viral infection of skeletal osteoclasts.
