Abstract
The reliable determination of gestational age and the ascertainment of pregnancy viability in cases of threatened abortion are by far the two most important contributions of sonography in the first trimester of pregnancy. The development of sophisticated sonographic techniques is creating new methods of sonographic investigation applicable in the first trimester. These new techniques have raised a number of questions: When routinely used, is the precision of the new equipment sufficient to offer data that are more accurate than traditional clinical information and to provide insight, into biological events? Will high-resolution intrauterine images permit traditional clinical classifications of first trimester pregnancy complications to be refined so that direct comparisons with classifications of embryopathies can be made? First trimester prenatal diagnosis is an interesting field where the capabilities of these new sonographic techniques can be tested.
