Abstract
It has become the fashion to use a series of criteria to make a diagnosis in psychiatry. The latest effort in this direction is the DSM-III system (1980) in the United States. The criteria for depression, however, do not define an illness; they simply define a syndrome. This syndrome is seen as a secondary phenomenon (secondary depression) in a number of medical and psychiatric illnesses (Stewart et al. 1965; Winokur 1972).
