Abstract
In patients with acute confusional state the history is frequently rather fragmentary, if it is available at all. There are a particularly large number of diagnoses that have to be considered. Symptomatic therapy may obscure the picture and impede recognition of the underlying cause. Therefore, the various conditions should quickly be grouped in order to reduce the number of diagnostic options. Useful groupings are: toxic, inflammatory, vascular, metabolic, exacerbation of degenerative disease, traumatic, or postictal.
